‘National Seminar on Composite Products Development – NASCOMP-96’ Take a delve into the archives to see Brian Hirst’s research on CHOOSING THE RIGHT Cutting Tools for Carbon Composites.
In response to the widespread adoption of composites in various high-tech applications across India in the early 1990s, there arose a clear need to assess the actual progress, discoveries and achievements in this field. The National Seminar on Composite Products Development in 1996, known as NASCOMP-96, emerged as a relatively innovative concept. This event was designed to exclusively focus on composite hardware and aimed to facilitate the exchange of invaluable practical insights among leading practitioners in the world concerning composite product development initiatives.
NASCOMP-96 delved into various aspects of composite product development programs within the country, encompassing areas such as tooling, manufacturing, machining, and quality control, all of which was thoroughly discussed during the seminar. This publication contains papers related to these topics, thereby serving as a valuable repository of information that may not be readily accessible elsewhere.
Brian Hirst of Gandtrack Ltd, in Tamewater Mill at the time, wrote a short report and presented it in the seminar, about Gandtrack’s personal experience in composite product development and the techniques that they adopted early on to gain a competitive edge over other emerging businesses. The report outlined:
- Choice of tool and its design
- Alternative tool materials
- Cutting techniques
- Specially design tools
- Tool cutting
- Tool care
